THE African Hockey Federation (AfHF) has assured Uganda and Kenyan Hockey Associations of installing sun and water based astrotough by March and May 2005 respectively.

AfHF president Hamed Seif, who visited Uganda for the first time on Thursday, ordered that construction of the long awaited sun based ground starts at the National Council of Sports grounds, Lugogo in December or January and should be completed by March.

“It is because of the poor grounds that hockey standards have kept low in the region. The good message I have is that AfHF wants to finish installation of the modern ground in Kampala by March and in Nairobi by May so that they can also host big events here. Your government has to top up our offer of $0.01m and ensure the project is finished. You will get equal opportunities of development,” Seif said during a gathering that drew hockey officials from Tanzania, Kenya, Zanzibar and hosts Uganda.

He said that International Hockey Federation and AfHF had also offered Kenya a water-based ground.

UHA’s plan to install the modern ground stalled last year when Sudhir Ruparelia withdrew his offer of land and installation charges after disagreements with UHA.
