No! The largest birs alive today, the ostrich, cannot fly. Nor can Kiwis, Rheas, Cassowaries, nor Emus. These species have no keel in their breastbone, that is, no broad strong bone to which are attached the muscles needed to power the wings.
Penguins do have the keel, and more than a century ago, their ancestors could fly. Today, penguins’ keel supports the flipper muscles, for swimming, not for flying.
Emus are inquisitive birds. They feed on fruit and insects but are known to steal coins and keys. Cassowaries are aggressive. They are found only in New Guinea and Australia. Kiwis are found only in New Zealand.
Penguins are well-adapted to the cold that they can breed in the bitter cold and darkness of the Antarctic. And the giant ostrich... we are lucky we have them here in Karamoja!
