THE chess Olympiad’s travel plans are complete after an offer of three air tickets by Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA).

USPA chairman Joseph Kabuleta handed the tickets to team captain-cum-coach Joe Kaamu at Lugogo yesterday.

The world’s biggest chess’ biggest competition will run from Friday until October 31 in Mallorca, Spain.

The tickets worth sh6.1m were secured after a last ditch effort by Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) to send a full team.

“USPA is proud to contribute to a worthy cause, the Olympiad is part of our sporting calendar,” Kabuleta said. “We are looking forward to covering the exploits of the team.”
Kaamu praised USPA and said this was the biggest sponsorship they had received from any organisation.

He promised that the team will represent the country gallantly.
“The team is dominated by young men who are eager to take on the world’s best players,” Kaamu said.

The tickets go to Shadrack Kantinti, Fred Washaba and an official John Kikonyogo.
The trio together with Kaamu and UCF chairman Enock Barumba leave tomorrow.
The first batch of four players comprising Stephen Kawuma, Grace Nsubuga, Moses Kawuma and Isaac Munanira depart today.

Uganda’s opponents in the first of the 14-round event will be known tomorrow.
