THE South African government is to exhume the remains of its freedom fighters buried in Kampala and re-bury them in Luweero district, the defence ministry said.

The site of the eight graves of the former Africa National Congress (ANC) fighters at Lusase in Rubaga division, Kampala, is reportedly being redesigned for development.

The remains will be re-buried at Kaweweta in Luweero district where eight other ANC fighters were buried in the 1980s.
State minister for defence Ruth Nankab-irwa could not say what type of development was being planned for Lusase.

She said she recently exchanged visits with her South African counterpart, George Mluleki.
South Africa’s defence ministry spokesman Sam Mkhwanazi said, “There are many proposals on the Lusase graves but one of them, which appears to be strong is that the bodies could be reburied at the site where the eight fighters were buried.”
