The world watched Kony in silence for 18 years!

For those who studied biology, it is a well known fact that even an amoeba has interests

For those who studied biology, it is a well known fact that even an amoeba has interests. Having been a student of political science I also know that by nature, human beings are selfish.

I have worked in northern Uganda and I therefore understand what has perpetuated the northern war more than many other people. Mr Andrew Mwenda of the Monitor newspaper wrote on October 11 that President Museveni had lied to a press conference that LRA’s Vincent Otti had either “been seriously injured or may have even gone to hell’’ after a UPDF attack.

Apparently, Mwenda’s wish as insinuated in his article was “I hope he (Otti) is still alive”. what a sadistic interest! The same newspaper had in October 2003 run a false story bordering on wishful thinking that a UPDF helicopter had been hit by the LRA in Adilang in Pader district.

Whatever their interests were, the Monitor had sold out on Gulu streets by mid-day that day. The government of Sudan had hitherto sworn with impunity to distabilise northern Uganda by supplying the LRA with whatever it took to abduct children, rape women, kill and destroy means of livelihood of innocent civilians. Whatever interests they hoped to protect, this was of course farfetched.

Many NGOs in the north (which I will not name) have thrived on fabricated reports to create an impression to their funders that the conflict in the north is still a looming crisis in order to justify their next budgets. What would they otherwise do if there were no ex-abductees requiring psychosocial rehabilitation and reintegration?

Many a politician used the conflict to foment political capital by telling deliberate lies to the peasants that the government was not willing to end the war and so they would push it to be more serious to end the war if elected. Religious groups have won awards with the attached amounts of money in the name of their purported role in the struggle for peace through dialogue! but which peace has dialogue won from the LRA?

Of course the worst form of betrayal came from the international community. The Darfur crisis has not caused more suffering than what the LRA has caused in northern Uganda for 18 years! What was the urgency of the whole world rushing to Darfur?
Oil? The world was watching when Kony’s atrocities were going on! Nobody was interested but God’s judgement will be the same day for all of us!

The writer is the UPDF public
relations officer, northern Uganda?
