Whereas all fruits boost health, watermelon and lemon have an edge over other Fruits. “Watermelons and lemons contain micronutrients that relieve disorders ranging from pimples to impotence,” says Dr. Fred Machyokuku of Makerere University Medical School.

Both fruits improve health and beauty. They contain Vitamins B and C, soluble fibres and minerals like potassium, magnesium and phosphorus. Watermelon in particular is rich in vitamin A.

Both fruits help to keep the skin smooth and healthy. Vitamin C helps in healing wounds. The vitamin B complex present in the fruits helps keep the skin healthy and good-looking. It also prevents sunburn and early wrinkling. No wonder natural therapists advise some people to apply lemon juice on their faces.

Melon juice relieves depression. The Vitamin C is used to produce anti-stress hormones. Potassium slows down the heart rate and supplies oxygen to the brain cells. This improves the mental attitude.

Vitamins B and C clear poisons out of the blood stream. They prompt the kidney to pass out unwanted salts, amino acids and dead viruses. They also neutralise toxins that we might take with food, antibiotics and painkillers.

Vitamin C is also used in the production of antibodies that help us fight off diseases.

The United States Centres for Disease Control (CDC), says watermelon contains high amounts of lycopene, an antioxidant that reduces the risk of cancer and other diseases. It is a good source of vitamin A and vitamin C.

The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends watermelon as one of the most healthy snacks for both children and adults who want to avoid heart problems.

Think of unsweetened lemon juice as a natural slimming potion. It breaks down fats and stimulates the kidney to pass out water more often. It converts carbohydrates into energy, which can be spent during exercise. Over time, one sheds off the excess weight.

“Lemon contains soluble fibres that lower bad cholesterol (low density lipoprotein), reducing the risk of hypertension and heart disease,” says Christine Magala Nyago, who holds a masters degree in applied human nutrition. Vitamin B6, however stimulates the liver to produce more good cholesterol or high-density lipoprotein. This is essential for brain development in children, and for the production of female sex hormones.

One ought to take fruit juice at meals. It increases appetite and speeds up digestion. It also prompts the liver to absorb iron from leafy green vegetables.

Pregnant women are advised to include watermelon or lemon in their diet everyday. These fruits solve problems like anaemia, vomiting, sleeplessness and burning sensation in the eyes. “Acute lack of vitamin B6 causes internal bleeding,” says Dr. Ruth Kiboneka.

Pregnant women can compliment vitamin B6 in watermelons and lemon with organ meat.

Research confirms that B vitamins boost one’s libido and aid reproduction. They increase the flow of hormones and energy during intercourse. Fruit salads have been recommended for adolescent girls who suffer tension during menstruation. It is also believed that vitamin B complex delays the onset of menopause.

watermelon and lemon help prevent prostate cancer, diabetes and osteoporosis, says Dr. Fred Macyokuku.

Remember, the body can’t store its vitamins and minerals for more than 12 hours. So you should take at least two-three servings everyday. Make fruits a part of your life’s regime, year after year.

Always take freshly sliced fruit, for vitamin C declines when exposed to air. Refrain from drugs and alcohol. These deter the body from absorbing the micronutrients in fruits.

Compliment nutrients in the watermelon and lemon with fresh green vegetables and whole-grain cereals. Then you can reach the recommended daily allowance.
