The Government has approved three firms to provide and install speed governors in vehicles which carry over seven people, works ministry road safety officer David Kyakulaga said yesterday.

The firms are Motorcare Uganda, Safe Rider Uganda and Fuel O Mat.

The Government recently introduced the installation of speed governors in a bid to combat road accidents in the county.

Kyakulaga said the speed governors must have a one-year warranty.

He told a Uganda Taxi Operators and Drivers Association (UTODA) road safety seminar at Kibuye in Kampala that 17 firms had applied to supply and install speed governors.
“We only approved firms that met the standards,” he said.

Kyakulaga said the Government approved three types of speed governors: Safe Rider, Safe Stop and VDO RSL II.

Kyakulaga said the firms would acquire agents to install the speed governors and issue certificates to vehicle owner.

UTODA chief Moses Katongole said they needed time to install the speed governors in taxis because the exercise required money, which most members could not afford immediately.
