THE Government is to investigate the alleged sh2.5b being spent on funding former Vice-President Dr. Speciosa Kazibwe’s PhD studies at Harvard University, US.

Ethics state minister Tim Lwanga said this at the launch of the Anti-Corruption Week at the Constitutional Square, Kampala yesterday.

“If there is something wrong, we shall rectify it and move on,” he said.

Lwanga said if excess money was being paid, it would be refunded.

He was responding to concerns by the coordinator of the Anti-Corruption Coalition of Uganda (ACCU), Geoffrey Rwakabale and ACCU chairperson Wafula Ogutu at the function.

The launch started with a march from Lugogo to the Constitutional Square.

The theme for this year is ‘political corruption’ and the anti-graft week runs up to October 31.

Rwakabale described the funding as a luxury, which Uganda could not afford.

He urged Parliament to enact a law on the dispensation of politicians.
Ogutu demanded to know the criteria the Government used to give Kazibwe the money.

Kazibwe recently faxed a statement describing press reports on her funding as “hate propaganda.”

She did not mention the amount of money the Government was spending on her studies.

Presidential Senior Private Secretary for welfare Sikubwabo Kyeyune had questioned a sh47m expenditure on purchase of furniture and computers by Kazibwe.

The anti-corruption activists also handed over a petition to the Speaker of Parliament, Edward Ssekandi.

Lwanga said the Government was determined to fight corruption and if funds permitted, a special court for the Inspector General of Government (IGG) would be established to prosecute the corrupt.

The activists gave outgoing IGG Jotham Tumwesigye an anti-corruption award for 2004.
