THE Vice-President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, has said Africa’s biggest economic disaster is exporting raw materials without value- addition leading to loss of jobs and resources to developed countries.
“Africa’s economies will only be transformed by adopting an export-oriented strategy rather than sticking to import substitution. Export of raw materials should be stopped,†he said.
This was in a speech read by the foreign affairs state minister, Augustine Nshimye at the opening of the International Women Seminar at Hotel African Kampala recently.
“While de-husked Arabica coffee beans will fetch $1.2 per kilo, a kilo of roasted coffee beans may give as much as $18 at the super market level,†Bukenya said.
He urged African leaders to strategically address value-addition.
