THE Ugandan team drew its first match at the chess Olympiad in Mallorca, Spain, on Monday.

Moses Kawuma and Fred Washaba beat their Jamaican rivals Duane Rowe and Ian Wilkinson in the round ten action.

The match was drawn after national champion Stephen Kawuma and Shadrack Kantinti lost to Jamaica’s Shane Matthews and Russel Porter.

The result pushed Uganda, ranked 101, and the Atlantic Ocean Caribbean island of Jamaica, ranked 103 to 16 points each.

The draw comes after four wins and five defeats for the Ugandan team.

Ukraine, ranked second, drew with the United States, ranked 10th.
The top ranked Russians beat France, rated 17th 3.5-0.5.
Ukraine is still on top of the 14-round event at 29 points, Russia is second at 27 with Armenia third at 26.5.

The United States team is lying fourth at 26 points ahead of Israel at 25 and India at 24 points.
The International Chess Federation (FIDE) competition ends this weekend.
