Sweaty, muddy rugby squeezes

SO much for the game where Uganda’s women rugby team, Thunderbirds, outwitted and outplayed teams from Kenya, Rwanda and Burundi for the inaugural East African Women’s Seven’s title.

SO much for the game where Uganda’s women rugby team, Thunderbirds, outwitted and outplayed teams from Kenya, Rwanda and Burundi for the inaugural East African Women’s Seven’s title. The 19-inch trophy was not the only thing coveted by the players and the fans at the Kyadondo Rugby Football pitch last weekend.
A day before the start of the event, fans (majority of whom were of the male species) camped at the Silver Springs hotel in Bugolobi, awaiting the arrival of the foreign women’s rugby teams.
Others most definitely took to the salons and boutiques appearing with some of the most outrageous hairdos and dress codes for the one-day bonanza. 9:00am and the Kyadondo fan billboards and parking lots were screaming out for a breath of fresh air as the Thunderbirds clamoured onto the pitch for their encounter against Kenya’s Mwamba Invaders.
First, the gents stood up for a better view of the girls in their skimpy shorts as they presented a team anthem more in kimansulo form dominated by dancing, singing and caressing some body parts.
If the Thunderbirds were excellent, the day’s crowd was simply outstanding in a fashion competition of their own.
