The date for Uganda Electricity Distribution Company (UEDCL) to be concessioned by Umeme Ltd has been postponed from November 1 to an unknown date, a statement from the company said yesterday.

However, Umeme remains committed to the project and all parties are working hard to effect the transfer as soon as possible.

But there are conditions within the agreement which have to be met prior to the take-over, which have not been fulfiled.

UEDCL has therefore extended staff contracts to accommodate the delay.

Umeme was supposed to take over after four months transition.

Umeme Ltd, a joint venture between Globeleq, the Commonwealth Development Corporation-owned emerging markets power company and Eskom, has been mandated to manage UEDCL for the next 20 years.

During that time, Umeme will pay rent to UEDCL for using its assets and invest more capital to improve distribution infrastructure.

UEDCL was split from Uganda Electricity Board.
