Business in Kampala yesterday came to a standstill as hundreds of people jammed city streets to welcome the Kabaka, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.
People climbed atop high-rise buildings as he toured Kisekka Market, Kikuubo and Nakasero Market, where he addressed a mammoth crowd of vendors and residents. He also visited Kampala Central Division headquarters.
Business tycoons in Kampala requested Mutebi to allow them build showgrounds for exhibitions at his Mengo palace similar to those of manufacturers at Lugogo. They donated to him a cheque of sh23m and an assortment of gifts.
This was at the opening of the multi-million Royal Complex opposite the old taxi park. It is owned by Godfrey Kirumira. Kirumira handed over a document containing the businessmen’s request to the Kakaba. “If he allows us, we shall mobilise ourselves,†he said after Mutebi opened the complex.
He said a percentage of proceeds from the show-grounds would go to Mengo coffers. At Nakasero, there was jubilations as visitors from London joined local councils to prostrate before the Kabaka.
In Kikuubo, traders complained about the muddy marrum road as Mutebi cruised through. “It is good you have come to see what (Kampala mayor John) Ssebaana has done for us,†they shouted.
Mutebi commended the business community, saying Kampala had transformed into a big city due to their efforts.
