PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni yesterday afternoon summoned the heads of Makerere University (MUK) and the Nakawa based Business School (MUBS) to State House, Nakasero, to diffuse the conflict between the two institutions, that has been going on for two years.

The meeting was attended by MUK Council chairman Gabriel Opio and the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Livingstone Luboobi, while MUBS was represented by the Principal, Wasswa Balunywa, his deputy, Kakuru, MUBS Council chairman Dr. Collin Ssentongo and Michael Kakooza, the MUBS secretary.

The Chancellor of MUK, Prime Minister Prof. Apolo Nsibambi, education minister Dr. Khidu Makubuya and the Attorney General, Amama Mbabazi, also attended the meting.
“He has invited us following the developments between the two institutions,” Opio said.

A source said the President was acting in his capacity as a “Visitor” a status granted him by the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2002, which gives him the authority to intervene in matters affecting public universities. The meeting was still going on by press time.

The institutions have been at logger heads over the status of MUBS, which is seeking court orders to be declared an independent public university affiliated to MUK and to also take control of the Masters in Business Administration (MBA) and the Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) external programmes.

The Government and the two institutions late last month agreed to have an out of court settlement on who had exclusive rights to run the two courses.

Acting director of Civil Litigation Joseph Matsiko told court last month that Mbabazi wanted the matter amicably settled, since both were government institutions.
