Ssese Islands ferry shows we’re going backward!

SIR— About three months ago, we visited the beautiful Ssese Island.

Our journey to Kalangala was fine, although we had to pay sh10,000 for the fuel of the ferry. In my view, the ferry is supposed to be free because it is the Government road people use to get to the islands.

We had a visitor from Holland and she went through an experience I believe she will never forget.

Our journey back was the worst part of it all. The ferry arrived in Kalangala late at about 2.30pm from the stipulated time of 1.00pm.

We eventually boarded and left the island at about 3.30pm. Half-way through our journey, the ferry master (Ssentongo) got a call from the island that some people had been left behind. We turned back to pick officials from World Vision.

No sooner had we re started our journey than some other people called that they should come back for them because they had sh30,000 to pay the ferry master.

To cut the long story short, we had to turn back a third time for some so-called district officials.

How is Kalangala going to develop with this kind of backwardness?

How can a ferry turn back three times to pick one person when there are more than 100 people on board?

This is bad news for the tourism industry in Uganda, let alone the duties people who use this ferry have to fulfill.

The Government should do something about it.
