JINJA district administration has agreed to pay their lawyers sh58m in a case where they are demanding royalties from the Uganda Electricity Generation Company (UEGC), for the use of the Kiira and Nalubale dams situated in the district.

Mwesigye, Egunyu & Co. Advocates had initially agreed to front for the district on a 10% commission of sh16m, when the lawyers negotiated for sh160m from the power company.

The district LC5 chairman, Fred Gume, said the district would divide the bill with Mpumude Division, with whom they share the royalties.

While answering questions from councillors over the hiked fees, Gume said the lawyers underestimated the the legal battle, which included travelling abroad to find out more about royalties rates in South Africa.

“They also used a lot of money on air time, proof of which they will produce after paying the bills,” Gume said.

He said the same lawyers would help the district recover sh400m from UEGC.
