BLUE Wave Beverages Uganda Limited, a $250,000 Chinese investment plans to make mineral water much affordable even for the common man.
“Mineral water in this country has been associated with the rich. But water is life which is supposed to be accessible by everybody not a luxury,†Yao Shouren, the Blue Wave managing director said in an interview over the weekend.
Shouren who boasts of being the only mineral water company processing from a pure spring said he was excited about the market response.
“You can’t believe how much we sold when we started in March 2003. But our production and market share have grown steadily. We remain committed to supplying cheap and safe water,†he said.
Shouren said their water was now available in most supermarkets and hotels after the Uganda National Bureau of Standards approved their source. Other clients include homes, offices, hospitals and other retailers.
To familiarise the product, Shouren said they hire out water dispensers to interested customers. Dispensers with 20-litre capacity go for sh60,000 per month and sh40,000 for 11.5-litre capacity.
The barely two-year company produces eight tonnes of mineral water a day although demand sometimes determines how much to produce.
Shouren also boasts of being the only local company with the latest state-of-the-art water processing technology.
He said this had helped the Fifth Street Industrial Area-based company to guard against forgery of the product, which is common with the mineral water.
“We import our hard seals directly from China,†Shouren said.
He said used bottles should be destroyed to beat forgers.
