It was a befitting home-coming for globe trotting singer, Jose Chameleone. After his performance in the US, Tanzania, UK and Sweden, the singer, who won Best African Artiste at the Swedish African Awards, came back to celebrate his musical accolades in the past few months and thank his fans for their support.
Chameleone also won Artiste of the Year and Song of the Year (Jamila) at the Pearl Of Africa Music Awards last month. He won Best International Artiste at the Tanzania Music Awards and was nominated for Best East African Artiste at the Kora All Africa Awards 2004, all in the same month!
The avenue for his appreciation was a local tour dubbed ‘Chameleone Agabudde’ (Chameleone’s treat) the first concert, which was held at Blue Africa and the second (at which he reportedly served his fans with meat) at Ggaba Beach.
The Blue Africa concert (a bout of rain notwithstanding) was electrified in every sense of the word. Fans, who had to part with sh20,000 each to gain entry, jammed the venue in droves and were a pretty bubbly lot.
Although the show kicked off at 9:00pm, it practically dragged until Chameleone and Mr Nice leapt on stage at about a quarter to eleven.
For some reason, the curtain raisers just were not up to it. The only exception was East World, who clearly demonstrated to their fans that it was not for naught that they were honoured at the PAM Awards.
Chameleone’s performance was in two parts. In the first half, he played all the songs that his fans yearned for — Kuma Obwesigwa, Dorotia and the Orlandoh duet — Mama Wange. The second half, which saw him change his attire to a white ship captain’s uniform, ushered in a visibly stoned Mr Nice.
The performance was live and gripping. But don’t ask me to point a finger at what exactly made it tick.
The excitement was built up more by the two singers’ stage antics than actual singing.
True, we even got to see MTN’s Rita Okuthe get down with Jose Chameleone, but I don’t remember Mr Nice really singing or did he? Some impromptu vocalising came in handy though.
And, still, there was an attempt at the two singing together. From Kikulacho, there was Beyi Kali, then Mambo Bado somewhere and Jamila, which was done pretty impressively.
And the end of the night though, fans staggered and sauntered out in high-spirits.
Chameleone had served them all right! Blame it on the power of live performance.
