THE Government is to spend sh9b on fees for secondary school students living in the internally displaced persons (IDPs) camps in Teso, Acholi and Lango.

The state minister for disaster preparedness and refugees, Christine Amongin Aporu, on Thursday said sh1.5b would be spent per term for two years.
Aporu also told the government weekly press briefing that the school-feeding programme, which was piloted in Teso, would spread to Lango and Acholi.

She said the programme was intended to ensure attendance and reduce school drop-out rates.
The minister said the programme had benefited 10,016 children in 27 primary schools.

She said there were 1.4 million IDPs at the height of insurgency in the north, adding that improved security had enabled some IDPs to voluntarily go back home to engage in economic activities.

Aporu said Teso last year received sh756m for drug purchases and primary health care. Lango got sh989m and Acholi sh755m.

She said sh621m was released for provision of water and sanitation services in Kaberamaido and Soroti districts.

Aporu also said the government had started surveying refugee settlements to get land titles.
She said individuals had encroached on the settlements and even acquired land titles for their pieces.

“Information indicates that there was fraud in the way the titles were issued. Those titles will be cancelled,” Aporu said.
