WARDROBE

“If a woman is poorly dressed, you notice the clothes; if she is impeccably dressed, you notice the woman.”

“If a woman is poorly dressed, you notice the clothes; if she is impeccably dressed, you notice the woman.” (Coco Chanel)

Let’s face it, ladies, the best wardrobe is one that’s taken seriously.

It’s not about how much money we spend. It’s about setting our creative genes to work, being adventurous, and, very importantly, having a well thought-out, effective wardrobe. In otherwords, it does not really matter if you haven’t got tonnes of clothes, it’s how you work with what you have.

So what is an effective wardrobe?

It is one that works. It must have:
1. A foundation of well–cut, generally plain-coloured classics that form a baseline upon which to build your accessories.

2. Accessories! Accessories! Accessories! This is the magic word in fashion.

Every glamorous woman that you know is armed with this versatile tool. Hats, scarves, jewellery, shoes, bags, you name it; just go for it, girl, be bold and make your own statement.

What’s the point of playing it safe so we all sit at functions looking pretty much the same — safe but boring?

“The greatest part of our attractiveness lies within, and it wells up from inside and finds a creative and appropriate expression on the outside.” (T. D. Jakes).

But, much as we are going to dare to be different, being “different” should not be interpreted as a licence to do kimansulo!

Self–respect is a prerequisite to achieving that sophisticated, dignified look!

As we approach the season of festivities, let’s determine, ladies, to break out of our conventional shells and hit the town in search of a new image — a look that has our name on it.

A few tips while you are out shopping:
l Go for vibrant colours — African skin wears colour
wonderfully.

l As much as your pocket will allow, go for quality fabric, in natural fibres — silks, cotton, linen — and simple cuts. This combination always produces a winning look.

l Look for a really funky pair of shades, to give a final touch. If you are buying inexpensive shades, avoid anything with metallic trims.
Finally, and most importantly, good grooming! This is an essential to style.

Don’t even bother putting on your well-thought-out outfit, if you are wearing chipped nail polish, and your hair is crying out, “Wash me!”
Always remember, clothes define us; they tell the world who we are.

So let’s break away from the mainstream and enjoy being ourselves — God’s creatures, fearfully and wonderfully made!
