Kampala Ballet and Modern Dance School (KB&MDS), the first of its kind in the country, has been commissioned, two months after it was started.

Nnabagereka Sylvia Nagginda, flanked by Toro Queen Mother Best Kemigisha and the school board of directors, presided over the opening ceremony. Nagginda is the founder and patron of the school.

The Nnabagereka said she introduced ballet to provide an appropriate dance for the young, from which they could share positive experiences. With this, she added, the youth will be able to appreciate and share in the excitement and benefits of dance.

“It was my hope that ballet, a dance from a foreign culture, with a possibility of being misunderstood, will be accepted,” she said.

Maria Kiwanuka, a board member and proprietor of Radio One, said one of the main objectives of the school was to contribute to the well-being and development of Uganda’s youth.

She said the school would provide financial support to the Nnabagereka Developm-ent Trust Fund, which seeks to improve the welfare of disadvantaged children and youth.
She said through dance, the children would gain mental focus, self-confidence and poise, while maximising the sense of teamwork.
