THE East African magistrates and Judges Association has called for the creation of a legal framework to allow cross-border legal practices.

The association’s president, Justice Lawrence Mchome (Tanzania), said the move would enhance the region’s integration process.

AICC ECHO, a quarterly magazine published by Arusha International Conference Centre, on Monday quoted Mchome as saying the new system would facilitate the exchange of magistrates and judges in East Africa.

“A mechanism should be put in place whereby if there are shortages of magistrates and judges in a partner state within the region that state could either recruit or borrow from another, instead of importing them from other countries outside the region,” Mchome said.

Mchome, who led a delegation of 12 executive members of the association on a tour of the East African community (EAC) Secretariat, said the association had some of the top legal experts in East African.

He said the legal experts were ready to contribute to EAC’s integration efforts by providing legal and judicial services.

EAC secretary general Major Amanya Mushega said the formation of more regional professional associations would strengthen the community.
