NATIONAL Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) made sh12.5b in profits this financial year, the managing director, Dr. William Muhairwe, has said.
Muhairwe said this while presenting a paper on productivity and work ethics at a seminar for the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda at Imperial Resort Beach Hotel in Entebbe, recently.
“We have turned the once collapsing parastatal into a profit-making company. Last year, we made sh7b in profits,” he said.
Muhairwe said they were making profits because of hard work and being ethical.
“The Government’s budget for us was sh22b in 1998, but for the five-year programme, we have increased the budget to sh44b,’’ Muhairwe said.
“We are better because we changed our approaches to suit market demands and service delivery,’’ Muhairwe said.
He said they had reduced employees from 1,850 to 850.
“Daily collections have improved by 60% in the last five years. Collection efficiency is 102%,’’ Muhairwe said.
He said initially, bill accountability was 40% due to inefficiency and accumulated government arrears, which were 50% of total revenue annually.
“Some time back, we were threatened by the sale of the company because of inefficiency. But given the standard pay, we changed every thing,’’ Muhairwe said.
He told employers to ensure efficiency.
