Dear Dr, I want to know whether taking a lot of unboiled fresh dairy milk has any side effect. I take two litres a day at different intervals but many of my friends have warned me about it so am very afraid. Alex
Dear Alex, Milk is a great food. It has lots of protein, fats and vitamins. It also has minerals that our body needs. For the newborn child it is a perfect food, with all the food values and protection against infection that the baby needs. As we grow older, our needs become more complex, and milk is less necessary. It still gives us great food value. Un-boiled, or untreated milk is not safe. Diseases like brucellosis (a fever-like-illness), and Tuberculosis can be transmitted from the cow to human beings through milk. In addition, because milk is a very good food, bacteria very quickly grow in it. This can cause stomach upsets and ‘food poisoning’ when you take it without boiling. Pasteurisation or boiling milk before we drink it makes it safe. When you take lots of milk for a long time, you run the risk of developing a disorder called the ‘Milk Alkali Syndrome’. It is due to the absorption of calcium, a salt that is abundant in milk. The calcium is normally used in the making of bones. When too much is taken in, it is deposited in tissues like the kidneys. This can cause kidney failure. Milk has fat in it, taking lots of it can lead to weight gain. Alex, you can take a glass or two of milk a day safely, and you would enjoy this great food without fear.
