JOSEPH Musasizi, the brother of exiled former presidential candidate Col. Kizza Besigye, is to face treason charges.
The Police said Musasizi, a businessman arrested by the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI), was interrogated on Tuesday and yesterday over links with a recent cache of arms impounded on the way to a rebel group in the DR Congo.
The guns were seized by Jerome Kakwavu of the Congolese Armed Forces, a rebel group which controls Aru and Mahagi customs posts.
Musasizi was arrested by plain-clothes operatives on Tuesday at gun point at Crane Bank main branch opposite the Constitutional square.
The Joint Anti-terrorism squad interrogated him at the CID headquarters, where he recorded a statement, and where he was still being held by press time. Acting CMI chief James Mugira said Musasizi was handed over to the Police because the intelligence organ did not have detention facilities.
CID acting commissioner for crime Edison Mbiringi said Musasizi was likely to be charged with treason today.
“He may appear in court tomorrow (today) or any time we finish with the investigation. His arrest is in connection with the developments in Congo and investigations are still going on,” Mbiringi said.
Police sources said Musasizi was also quizzed in connection with the recruitment and training of rebels.
“He has helped us in one area and we are supposed to move to another one where we expect him to co-operate,” a source said.
Seventy-six guns including AK47s believed to belong to the People’s Redemption Army (PRA), were seized in Aru zone in the DR Congo.
The Government has linked Besigye and three renegade UPDF colonels, Edison Muzoora, Samson Mande and Anthony Kyakabale to the PRA.
Musasizi is also a promoter of a new opposition force, FDC, of which Col. Besigye is the defacto head.
One of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) joint chairmen, Sam Njuba said they searched in vain for Musasizi at CMI headquarters at Kitante and at the Central Police Station.
