FIVE people have been nominated as High Court judges

FIVE people have been nominated as High Court judges, reports Jude Etyang.
They are the Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, Simon Byabakama and the Registrar Court of Appeal, Joseph Murangira.
Sources yesterday said the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) also nominated Chowdry, a Ugandan-Asian lawyer based in the UK.
Justice minister Janat Mukwaya said she had received the names from JSC but had deferred one of the nominees.
She returned the list to the JSC to replace the deferred candidate before forwarding the list to the president and Parliament for approval.
“I deferred one and gave my reasons to the commission. I asked them to replace that person by the end of the week. Once they have replaced the name, they will be forwarded to the appointing authority,” said Mukwaya.
Former Solicitor General Peter Kabatsi has also been recommended by the Uganda Law Society (ULS) for appointment as a Supreme court judge to replace Justice Cosmas Kato who recently retired.
“The Uganda Law Society has many times recommended me for the appointment as a judge because I have the qualifications like many senior lawyers in the city,” Kabatsi said.
Byabakama also welcomed the nomination.
He said leaving the DPP’s office where he has successfully handled major high profile criminal cases will not affect the efficiency of the office.
“Absolutely not, we are many lawyers who have been handling these cases,” he said.
Among the major high profile cases, Byabakama successfully handled were former Tooro Kingdom premier John Katuramu and Asian businessman who are on death row for murder.
