FUFA vice president Godfrey Kwizera has backed out of the race for the top federation post, and instead promised to back incumbent Denis Obua.

Kwizera, who had always asked for a change of the constitution before he declares his presidential ambitions yesterday pulled out of the race.

“I had looked at going in for the presidency but the consultation I have had ever since the constitution was changed has forced me to act otherwise. I have pulled out of the race,” said Kwizera.

He said that this was a short period for him to do all the ground work and be able to win.

“I have now decided to support (Denis) Obua. I will only be campaigning for the position I have been holding (vice president administration),” he said.

The assembly will this time elect the president and six vice presidents for administration, technical, finance, youth, competition and marketing and sponsorship. The posts for the secretary, treasurer and their assistants were phased out after the constitution changes.

Kwizera’s pulling out leaves the race for presidency to be amongst the trio of Obua, Michael Okiror and former president Twaha Kakaire.

The election for the executive is set for January 5 with the polls.

The actual candidates to vie for the president’s post will be known at the closure of nominations on January 20, 2004. The nominations are set to start on December 21, a week after the election of the delegates to the general assembly.

Meanwhile, FUFA secretary Haruna Mawanda has clarified that the assembly was not dissolved but it was their term of office that expired.

“No body has the powers to dissolve the assembly. It is just that their term of office has expired. The constitution is very clear . The executive will stay in power until the day for the elections,” he explained.
