By James Odomel PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni is expected to open a multibillion Imperial Resort Beach Hotel Entebbe today. The hotel is owned by Karim Hirji. Velupillai Kananathan (left), the Imperial Group of Hotels executive director, said the project cost $31m. The hotel opened for business in May with an international women judges conference. Kananathan was jointly addressing a press conference with TERP Consult owner Odrek Rwabogo in Kampala recently. TERP are the event managers. “We shall put up presidential cottages around the lake. The hotel is so far the best in the region,†Kananathan said. He said the ultra-modern hotel, with 191 rooms, was constructed by Karim Hirji’s own team. “Karim was the architect and constructor. He built the hotel with his own team,†Kananathan said. He said if the contract was given to big construction companies, the hotel would still be under construction. “But the man (Karim) built the hotel in just 13 months,†Kananathan boasted about his boss. He said the hotel was unique and capable of favourably competing with world-renown hotels. “The hotel is the only one in Uganda with all modern facilities. This has made it a preferred destination for conferences and workshops,†Kananathan said. Karim Hirji is a pioneer in the hotel industry in Uganda. He ventured into the industry in the 1990s with the construction of Hotel Equatoria and Grand Imperial Hotel and later Imperial Botanical Beach Hotel Entebbe. The group plans another hotel between Nile Hotel and Sheraton Kampala Hotel. Drawings are being finalised before the construction commences, Kananathan said. The group employs up to 1,000 people. Ends
