THE UPDF killed two gunmen near Bunagana border post in Kisoro district at the Uganda-Democratic Republic of Congo-Rwanda border on Saturday.

Military sources said the army captured some weapons and ammunition.

The army spokesperson, Maj. Shaban Bantariza, said, “We are investigating the identity of the roaming armed group that trespassed on our territory. We hit them and some fled into Congo.

“We are working with MONUC (the UN peace monitoring team). We expect MONUC to deal with such armed thugs. We shall share our findings with them,” he said.

Other sources said the UPDF, on routine patrol, exchanged fire with the gunmen on the slopes of Mt. Muhavura for several hours.

Security agencies said the gunmen could have been Rwandan soldiers trying to cross into North Kivu from Ruhengyere in Rwanda on Saturday.

Life in Kisoro has returned to normal after the panic over the weekend shootout.
The district Police commander, Haruna Isabirye, said yesterday, “Everything is now fine in the entire district. No problem right now.”

He said Congolese refugees who had crossed to Busanza had gone back home.

“The town is now very fine. Everyone is on his or her business,” said Jackson Dufite Imaana, a resident of Kisoro town.
