Uganda’s open market should not be abused by importing fake products, President Yoweri Museveni has warned.

Uganda’s open market should not be abused by importing fake products, President Yoweri Museveni has warned.

Joyce Namutebi reports that Museveni urged exporters to adhere to standards to avoid losing market.

Museveni said in its export drive, Uganda had suffered restrictions due to failure to meet the required international standards.

This was contained in a speech read by the Minister for the Presidency, Kirunda Kivejinja, at a conference at Speke Resort, Munyonyo. The theme of the conference was “Doing business in Uganda: need for Reform?”

Museveni said, “In doing business, while making profit is good and acceptable, it should not be at the expense of employees.

“While our markets are open to investment, it should not mean importing counterfeit products. Business people including professional service providers like architects and contractors should honour and practice their code of ethics. The collapsing of building in Kampala has cost lives,” he said.

Uganda Law Reform Commission chairman Prof. Joseph Kakooza said the conference was to examine the applicability of the law, its practice, government policies and business strategies.

Kakooza said the commission had drafted over 25 bills on computer use, industrial property, traditional medicine, consumer protection and anti-dumping.
