A man, claiming to be a former student of Makerere University and an employee of the President’s Office, has been caught conning freshers.
Nathan Bogere Mugongo claims to be a holder of a masters degree in Education from Makerere. He recently fleeced a lady identified as Florence of sh65,000. He had convinced Florence that he had access to the admission office of Makerere and would secure her a place.
“He showed me the identity card for the deputy president of Makerere University and I believed him,” said Florence.
Mugogo then immediately brought her an admission letter and bank slips. The admission letter indicated that Florence was admitted to study a Bachelor of Arts degree at Makerere on a private sponsorship.
He also told her she had delayed to pick her admission letter for the course and that was why she had lost her place on government sponsorship.
Mugongo then requested Florence to bring sh700,000 for payment of tuition.
The official tuition fee for an arts course is sh450,000. Florence realised her bank slips were not stamped. She then went to the faculty office for clarification.
“When I saw the letter, I realised it was fake. I looked into the records and found her actual registration letter was lying there uncollected. The letter had a different registration number from that on the fake letter.” says a staff member in the Faculty of Arts.
The Academic Registrar in-charge of admissions said the conman was detained at the Police pending a decision by the office.
Bogere had certificates of a November 2003 masters degree in Education from Makerere University, an identity card of the President’s Office issued to him in February 2004 as a deputy director of Education.
He also possessed an old Makerere University identity card identifying him as a third year Education student, an identity card as a head teacher of St. Joseph Mixed Day and Boarding SS, Katosi, issued on May 20 this year by the district chairman on behalf of Mukono district private schools association.
He carried several certificates of teacher- training courses from Kyambogo.
He was taken to Wandegeya Police Station.
