SIX imbalu dancers died on Friday night when a speeding truck ran over them at Namulesa on Jinja-Kamuli road.

The 7:30pm accident injured 20 people, including four women.
The dead included Sula Bogere, 10, Gerald Magala, 14, a student at Mukono High School and Ronald Isabirye, 15, of St. Tadeo High School, Kagoma in Jinja district.

Jinja traffic Police chief Amanzia Bogere named others as Oliver Nandudu, 20, Bella Namumbya, 17 and a man whose identity was not established.

He said the truck swerved off the road and it fell into a trench.
Bogere attributed the accident to speeding by the driver of the canter truck UAD 707S.

He said the road had been jammed with imbalu dancers.
Jinja Hospital medical reports said most of those admitted had broken hands and deep cuts.

Three victims who were in coma were referred to Mulago Hospital in Kampala.

They included Doreen Nantono, 12, Tenywa Mulani, 25 and Maliq Mugaya, 21.

Bogere said the truck, which was loaded with molasses, was headed to Jinja from Kamuli.

Residents rushed at the scene with machetes and axes to raze the truck and its occupants but the Police intervened.

Imbalu is a Kigisu word for circumcision or initiation of boys into adulthood.

Before a boy is circumcised, relatives and friends dance with him through villages.
