PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has directed resident district commissioners (RDCs) to stop landlords from evicting people from land.

Museveni said he did not want to hear of any illegal evictions of movement supporters from the land.

“I am tired of hearing people complain that they are harassed, tortured and killed because of land disputes. The Movement wants people to be together and develop the country but not violence,” he said.

Museveni was on Friday addressing local leaders in Nakasongola district before the installation of the Isaabaruuli. The Baruuli had said they were being tortured and evicted from the land by the Baganda.

Museveni said nobody was allowed to evict people who have stayed for over 12 years on land.
He said former president the late Idi Amin was a dictator and a murderer who “ruled me for only one day and I opposed him the next day so that people could regain their dignity and identity on land and culture.”

Museveni said the movement government was ready to help those who support it and oppose those who were anti-movementists.

He said land issues were easy to deal with because the law clearly spelt out the rights of the bonafide and lawful tenants and those who hold title deeds.

Museveni said tenants should not be evicted unless they have agreed and are compensated.
He said the government would set up a fund to provide money to tenants so that they could pay the landlords.

Museveni warned against buying land where lawful tenants existed. He said such buyers could end up buying “air” if they did not negotiate with tenants and compensate them.
