KAMPALA City Council (KCC) is sub-leasing Container Village to a private developer to construct a five-storey car parking complex and residential apartments.

Container Village is located in Nakivubo, a few metres from St. Balikuddembe Market.

Sebco U, the developer will also put up a shopping mall and provide parking space for 1,020 cars.

Kampala district council chaired by speaker Sarah Ssebagala resolved to sub-lease the village to Sebco provided there is no negative impact on Nakivubo Channel, which is behind Container Village.

The sub lease will be for five years, which can be extended for not more than 49 years after the developments are done.

According to council minutes of November 11, the works, physical planning and inspection secretary, Amis Bireke, said Sebco would accommodate the container operators in the new plan.

“Upon payment of premium and ground rent to be assessed by the relevant organs of Council, the plot will be sub-leased,” the minutes read.

The district council wants Sebco to submit architectural building plans and structural details for the project.

“Council sets development obligations detailing time within which the applicant will accomplish the project and the obligations be signed before the sub-lease is effected,” the district council resolved.
