MTN Uganda has won a $970,200 (sh1.6b) contract to supply Internet bandwidth for a partnership between Boeing Aerospace and Makerere University’s Mechanical Engineering department, a statement released on Tuesday has said.
The statement from MTN said the partnership seeks to develop modern communication software.
The partnership will support courses related to design and product development to enhance locally-manufactured products.
“MTN has won the bid for supplying, installing and commissioning a fully-operational Very Small Terminal (VSTAT) system. It will also supply Internet bandwidth with 10Mbps initially. That will enable the university support integration of information and communication technologies,” the statement read.
MTN beat five companies to win the contract.
The bandwidth will also enhance the African Virtual University Connectivity project, which aims at promoting exchange of knowledge between African universities, the statement said.
VSTAT is a cost-effective solution for an independent communication network for many geographically-dispersed places.
It also offers value-added satellite-based services, which support Internet, data, local area network and voice/fax communications.
MTN’s chief operations officer Serame Taukobong said, “The project will showcase MTN’s ability to provide total communication solutions from basic individual needs to highly-sophisticated communication requirements for our customers.”
He said MTN offers access to high speed data.
