A TREMOR yesterday morning severely shook most parts of western Uganda, considered an earthquake-prone area.

Due to the earth tremor, the Police yesterday issued an alert, cautioning the public to immediately vacate their houses in case of tremors.

Police spokesman Asumani Mugenyi said the tremor started at about 4:30am and lasted an hour.
The senior seismologist in the department of Geological Survey and Mines, Fred Tugume, said the Richter scale reading would be established after getting data from upcountry stations.

Mugenyi said though there were no reports of any casualties, the alert was to forestall any casualties in case of some tremors in future.

“People should always evacuate their houses in case of an earthquake or tremor. During such incidents, buildings can collapse and people who remain inside may be killed,” he said.

The warning followed a tidal wave that slammed the coasts in Asia and East Africa, leaving a constantly rising death toll estimated at over 57,000.
