Well done, Mr President

SIR— The President has recently been under pressure to free political parties and to announce a successor. I would like to thank him for resisting this undue pressure. The democratisation process in Uganda is going at a good pace. Ugandans are now electing their local council leaders from village to district level, a good indicator of grassroots democracy.I find it contradictory for some politicians who claim be advocates of democracy to ask Museveni to announce a successor. Is democracy about thewishes of the incumbent president. If Museveni announced his son as successor, what would these politicians say? If the top politicians trust Museveni so much that they would want him to propose a successor, then they should have confidence in the Constitution Review Commission which he has put in place to seek the views of Ugandans on how the country should be governed.Samuel MugasiUniversity of Reading, UK
