By Phillip CorryUGANDA Swimming Federation’s (USF) preparations for the Commonwealth games has started earnestly.The local swimming body that has started building a strong swimming base will send four swimmers to the Islamic swimming championships in Tehran, Iran from Jan 31 to February 5.The team that was selected last year includes Gilbert Kaburu, Joel Kinalwa, Benham Solomon and Hilary Lakony, USF secretary Simon Mugisha accompanies the team as team manager. The team is expected to participate in 50, 100,and 200 meters freestyle, 50, 100 metres breaststroke, 50, 100 metres butterfly, 50, 100 metres backstroke.Other events that they will participate in include 200 meters freestyle 200 individual medley and 200 meters medley relay. The competition is the first on the USF calendar and it gives the federation good preparations ahead of the Commonwealth games in Manchester later in the year.The Ugandan swimmers go to the international meet after receiving swimming lessons from America’s finest swimming coach Tom Young who is conducting a FINA Level 1 swimming course at Grand Imperial Hotel.The federation will also take a team to the sixth FINA World Championships in Moscow, Russia in April.
