Announcing his intention to quit international football after Liberia’s campaign in the 2002 African Nations Cup, Weah said in an interview with AFP he would only return to Monrovia if there was a change of government. Weah, a former world footballer of the year said his high profile left Liberia’s rulers feeling threatened. “I have children who have still to grow up and go to school,” said Weah, a father of three. “I don’t want somebody to come and kill me because of my popularity,” the former AC Milan and Paris St Germain 35-year-old star said. “They have already burnt my house down,” Weah said. “They’ve repossessed my shops.
