Owor wins indoor 800m silver

MIDDLE distance runner Pascal Owor clocked 1 minute 49.4 seconds to win a silver medal in the Malmo indoor meet in Sweden.

By Norman Katende and Samson OpusMIDDLE distance runner Pascal Owor clocked 1 minute 49.4 seconds to win a silver medal in the Malmo indoor meet in Sweden.The race was won in 1:48.49 by David Fiegen, a son of the Swedish track and field coach Fiegen Romain, who is handling the Ugandan star. Fiegen is also a training partner to Owor.Kenyan David Karonei clocked 1:49.83 to take the bronze medal in the competitive meet, which was also a warm-up for the Luxembourg national championships due on Sunday.Owor has been able to compete in Europe courtesy of a cooperation programme financed by the Luxembourg Olympic Committee, the Sports Ministry and Fiegen to help him train, improve his personal time and qualify for the Commonwealth Games.Other athletes on this programme are Karonei and Philemon Kibet both from Kenya and Glory Dube from Botswana.After Sunday’s national championships, Owor is to compete in the B-races of the big meetings (Energizer-Euro series) in Stockholm (Sweden) February 6th and in Gent(Belgium) February 10th.r Kakira Sugar Works have gone into residential training ahead of the national cross-country championships in Kapchorwa this weekend.The 10-man team entered residential training two weeks ago under coach Nathan Mujongola.“We are ready to take on any best team,” said Mujongola. “We do not care about the high altitude, we are prepared for anything,” he added.Marathoners Sirino Abong, Isaac Suzuki, Moses Ladu and Benson Onyait are the backbone of the team. Defending champions Arua are also in a residential training at Arua Public School in a bid to grab the senior men and junior women’s title.Arua Athletic Club official Beatrice Ayikoru, however said finances may be the only constraint for the West Nile side.Dorcus Inzikuru and Happy Mary Bacia will lead Arua women’s bid.A team for the Eastern Africa cross-country championship in Kampala on March 2 will be named thereafter.ends
