Mugisha could salvage NFLC

I am one of those who contrary to the general disappointment over the new National Football League Committee believe that the new team is not entirely a recycle of the old order. My hope mainly lies in a slightly built man, who could easily pass unnoticed until you study his exploits. This man is Standard High School director Justus Mugisha. As secretary, he is supposed to be the dynamo that runs the committee — a role he has anxiously pounced on.True, he has not been in the limelight as regards soccer management. But, he nevertheless has had a feel of what it takes to manage Uganda’s most chaotic sport. His battles include bargaining for affiliation to FUFA for Wakiso district besides a spirited campaign to have Standard High School as the first school in the Nile Special Super league. The latter has had the school twice reaching the the zonal mini league despite using students, where other schools would have preferred mercenaries. His experience as National Post Primary Private Schools Associations secretary will also be handy. But, is this enough on a committee where even the best lawyers would be beaten by street-wise club administrators capable of manipulating laws from black to white? That NFLC chairman Godfrey Kwizera mainly heads the committee by ‘remote control’ from his Kabale base, is yet another indicator of the load that awaits Mugisha. What about the big-club-influence? Does he have what it takes to rise above compromise?Time will tell. But inspiring about the physics and mathematics teacher, is the high regard he places in teamwork. That he is a disciplinarian and also not a hungry man, should also be priceless tools in his efforts to put things right. But, when you get to the NFLC laws, you are gripped with uncertainty by Mugisha’s over-confidence. “These are just like any other laws and I will interpret them as such,” he says. The fears, however, quickly disappear when you realise that he is already seriously studying the rule book instead of waiting for the law to be broken. jbakama@newvision.co.ugends
