Ugandans will remain poor!

SIR—If the government talks about creating employment through private means what does the statement imply? That Ugandans will survive on such sectors alone?

SIR—If the government talks about creating employment through private means what does the statement imply? That Ugandans will survive on such sectors alone? That Ugandans will cumulatively improve their living standards through wage labour? Yes, we have seen figures showing dollar value of exports and gross tax revenues, but who is exporting what? Is it the general Ugandan citizenry or owners of the private entities? How many Ugandans have been employed in the coffee and mining sectors over the past 40 years. Who in Uganda does actually survive on coffee and mining income alone? Has the coffee and mining sectors seen increased income to coffee farmers and mine workers, if not, why? If wages are the measure of prosperity, thus an indicator on which poverty is being calculated then Ugandans are going to remain in perpetual poverty. D. BwanikaKampala
