By Gerald TenywaTHE East African Cooperation (EAC) Secretariat has started a programme to assist member states reduce the degradation of Lake Victoria.EAC’s Dr. Tom Okurut and Dr. Kapyas Kipkore told a press conference on Monday that the Lake Victoria Development Programme (LDVP) has been formulated to conserve the lake.“The lake is threatened by poverty and lack of co-ordination by the different partners working to protect it,†Okurut said.He said various species of flora and fauna including fish stocks were declining yet several organisations had diverse interests in the lake.“The LDVP will harmonise the efforts of different players and avoid duplication,†Okurut said.In Uganda, the Ministry of Foreign affairs will co-ordinate the programme.Ends
