THE death of Jonas Savimbi, the UNITA rebel leader, has sparked off hot debate among some residents of Kampala. On Sunday, there was drama at a bar in Wandegeya when two men pounded hard at each other over Savimbi’s death. It all began when six men in the bar were watching TV which broadcasted that the Angola army had killed the rebel leader.A heated argument ensued as to whether Savimbi should have been killed or not. Some sympathised with him while others condemned him. “How can you sympathise with a man who has caused instability in Angola for over 20 years? He got what he deserved,†Kalyango argued in anger.“He was fighting for a cause, he was a freedom fighter,†Wandera said.Kalyango in anger said those who sympathise with Savimbi, the villain, are not any different from him.Wandera felt insulted. Other people in the bar jeered at him while they cheered Kalyango. However, Wandera had to prove that he was a man entitled to his opinion.“Well, if you have defeated me in the verbal debate, let’s see who is more of a man,†he challenged. In a split second, Wandera, dazed with anger, grabbed Kalyango by the neck and rained blows on him until colleagues separated them. The two were forwarded to the drinking joint’s disciplinary committee and hearing of their case was set for the following day.ends
