By William Muwonge ON-form Stephen Kawuma won five games and drew one on Sunday to lead 12 players into the second round of the chess Olympiad qualifiers. The 21-year-old Kawuma earned 5.5 points from six games of the first round at Waterford Nursery school in Banda. Kawuma was a point better than Isaac Munanira while Shadrack Kantinti, Hassan Mulambe and Kawuma Mutumba got 4 points each. The other qualifiers, including national champion Bob Bibasa, got 3.5 points each. The first round drew local chess’ 26 top brains. One more round will be held in June and the top six players will qualify for the Olympiad. The Makerere undergraduate beat Bibasa, Agaba, Joseph Kizza, Kantinti, Wanderema and drew with Munanira. “It was a tough event, the opposition is ever growing, many good players are coming up,” Kawuma said and said he is set for the next round. ends
