By Fortunate AhimbisibweMAKERERE University is to start a compulsory university-wide remedial English course to improve the communication skills of the students. The Senate, the highest academic decision-making body, during its last meeting decided to start a course in communication skills in a bid to address the deteriorating standard of English. “The course will not only apply to the new students but even those who are already here. It’s true the standard of English grammar at the university is poor. We have decided to start a remedial course for those who are already here. It will cover the whole university,” an official said. The Director of the Institute of Languages, Dr. John Kalema, said the standard of basic skills in English language had tremendously gone down over the years.“There is no doubt that the basic skills in English as a language has gone down. Lecturers have complained about this, especially the writing skills. They find it a problem when marking exams. Some students even find it a problem to communicate,” Kalema said.He said the syllabus for the course had already been developed and would be implemented soon.
