SIR— This is in reaction to the article published in your paper entitled All Makerere University students to offer English. This has been long overdue. English is the backbone of communication in business and if we have managers who cannot communicate effectively both on paper and orally, then the future of Uganda is doomed to fail. We shall have leaders who are mediocre rather than providers of leadership. I have received many messages from Makerere graduates, but there is a lot to be done in this regard. My brothers and sisters even fail to construct full sentences in English. All you read are just phrases. Perhaps theother thing Makerere administration should look into is to train these students in computer basics, things like word processing, powerpoint and so on. A lot of them do not know how to use these latest word processors like microsoft word and theother simple programmes. I hope those in charge will listen to the recommendations and calls from those concerned about the issue. The media industry should also be very cautious on which people they hire to gather and write news for them. Some of these people sometimes write what is not understood by their audience which is an embarrassment to the media houses.Michael D. KaluyaDallas, TX, USA
