After political liberation, it should now be freedom from poverty!

SIR— The word poverty is now almost like a national slogan in our country.

SIR— The word poverty is now almost like a national slogan in our country. We should not have been engulfed by poverty if the government had really contained the situation earlier. In villages, many farmers are agonising over their commodities such as coffee, beans, groundnuts, maize, etc for lack of market. That is why many young people do not want to stay in villages. Some workers are not paid in time, which is also causing a draw-back, and retarding their arrangements for good living. Many retired civil servants are very poor; they should also be paid their pension without discrimination or undue delay. When we come to the condition of street children and jobless people, that is a school for criminals. It is better if those concerned can pull their socks and modernise the condition before it becomes as a weapon to some others. The Government should carry the heavy stone (olubengo) before many Ugandans are heavily misguided.Joseph KyomyaKyegegwa, KyakaKyenjojo District
