Tz generals celebrate Idi Amin overthrow

EIGHT Tanzanian generals, veterans of the 1979 Uganda liberation war, yesterday graced celebrations to mark the 23rd anniversary of the overthrow of Idi Amin’s military dictatorship.

They were attended by visiting presidents Daniel arap Moi of Kenya, Benjamin Mkapa of Tanzania and their host, Yoweri Museveni.Mrs. Maria Nyerere, the widow of the late Tanzanian president Julius Nyerere, and her two daughters graced the occasion.The Tanzanian generals included Gen. D.B. Musuguri who was the overall commander of the 1979 war, Gen. T. Kiwelu, Maj. Gen. M. Kimario, Maj. Gen. S. Boma, Maj. Gen. A. Resegeya, Brig. Gen. R. Bayeke and Brig. Gen. G. Mukindi as well as Colonel H. Muhamad.Maj. Gen. Mwamunyange represented the Chief of Defence Forces of the Tanzanian army.The celebrations were restricted to invited guests. Ugandan veterans of the 1979 war, who included Lt. General Salim Saleh, Lt. Gen. Elly Tumwine, Brig. Sam Nanyumba, Lt. Col. Tony Otoa, Lt. Col. Chris Mudoola and scores of others, joined the military parade.
