Six Children Join Museveni For UN Meet In New York

A TOTAL of 15 youths from Africa, including six from Uganda are to accompany President Yoweri Museveni to the first ever UN Special General Assembly on Children that opens in New York next week.

By John EremuA TOTAL of 15 youths from Africa, including six from Uganda are to accompany President Yoweri Museveni to the first ever UN Special General Assembly on Children that opens in New York next week.Museveni’s Press Secretary, Mary Karooro Okurut, said yesterday that the President would attend the session where he was chosen to deliver a message on behalf of the African children.The general assembly to run from May 8 to 10 is supposed to review the goals of the World Summit on Children held in 1990. The assembly will be preceded by a children’s session from May 6 to 7.The children include Asuma Mutoni from Lincoln International School who spoke on behalf of the children during the launch of the Girls’ Education Movement (GEM) in August last year.Others are Janet Zabali, Caroline Nalwanga and Pearl Kwezi from Makerere University who participated in debates during the GEM launch. The education ministry spokesman, Aggrey Kibenge, said Carol Barebwoha from Gayaza High School and Joseph Tamale from King’s College Budo would also travel. The children take off Friday. The trip was sponsored by the UN Children’s Fund.Those from other countries include Neo Mooki (Botswana), Eric Topana (Chad), Janet Jobson (South Africa) Awatif Moursi and Ahmed El-Howary (Egypt), Salome Katia and Lilian Khayoya (Kenya) and Mwape Namfukwe, Yoram Siame and Pekwa Kalima from Zambia.Ends
